In a double overtime thriller, the Hugoton Eagles found a way to pull out the win over the Scott City Beavers on Friday night in the Sterling Invitational Basketball Tournament by the score of 43-40.
With seven ties and seven lead changes, the game was up for grabs the entire way. Led by Emmett Gaskill with 11 points, the Eagles jumped out to a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter. However, the Beavers would come back to tie things up at 22-all at halftime. The two teams would remain tied after each of the final two periods before going into the first overtime. The Eagles put up two strong defensive stands in the final seconds of the second overtime to secure the win. Scott City won the rebounding edge, 25-14, but lost the turnover battle, committing 27 turnovers to just 17 for Hugoton. The Beavers were led in scoring by Jackson Rumford with a game-high 16 points, followed by Sage Stoecklein with 11. Now 7-1 on the season, Hugoton will take on the host, Sterling Black Bears in the championship contest at 4:30 pm in the Gleason Center at Sterling College.
