      The game was not only close on the scoreboard, but also throughout the stat sheet as well.  Both teams shot 41 percent from the field and 50 percent from the foul line. Both teams grabbled 26 rebounds and there were five ties and 4 lead changes.
      The final tie came at 52-all with on a turnaround jumper in the lane by Boston Ekart of Sterling with just 12 seconds left in the contest. Following a timeout by the Eagles with .08 on the clock, Hugoton turned the ball over to Sterling with 2.3 seconds left in the game.
      Coming out of the Black Bear timeout, with the ball in their backcourt, Sterling found Ekart in the deep corner, where he drove the baseline and was fouled with just 0.6 left in the game. The sophomore went to the line and hit his first free throw attempt.  A miss on his second attempt left Hugoton with only a full-court hail mary to win the game.

      Ekart and Carson Gray paced the Bears, 10-1, with 12 points each. Zane Farney and Gabe Riffel each grabbed seven rebounds. Hugoton, 7-2, was led by Emmett Gaskill with 16 points and Izeyah Harris with 12. Harris also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.]]>
<![CDATA[Lady Vikings nab first SIT Championship]]>Sun, 21 Jan 2024 03:01:21 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/lady-vikings-nab-first-sit-championship​The Smoky Valley Lady Vikings, 5-4 overall, rode the coattails of Adrian Hazelwood and her game-high 23 points and some stout defense to claim the championship in the Sterling Girls Invitational Tournament on Saturday with a 46-32 win over the Southeast of Saline Lady Trojans.
      After playing to an 8-8 tie in the first period, the Lady Vikings put the clamps on Southeast to the tune of 18 percent field goal shooting for the Lady Trojans for the game.  Back -to-back 15-point quarters by Smoky Valley in the second and third quarters was more than enough to claim their first tourney title in Sterling.   
      Katja Blanchat helped the Lady Viking cause with nine points and 11 rebounds. Abigail Pearson had 11 points, while Lexi Jacobson pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Trojans, now 7-3, in a losing effort.]]>
<![CDATA[Trojans narrowly defeat Scott City for Third]]>Sun, 21 Jan 2024 02:56:23 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/trojans-narrowly-defeat-scott-city-for-thirdComing down to the very end, the Southeast of Saline Trojans held off the Scott City Beavers for third place in the Sterling Invitational Tournament by the score of 49-47 on Saturday at Sterling College.
      Close the entire way, the game featured five ties and seven lead changes. Scott City, 7-3, grabbed the lead early, leading 15-10 after the first period. The Beavers held on to that small lead at the half, but the Trojans did trim that advantage to just 26-23.
      The top scorers for each team were Gannon Jacobson for Southeast and Jackson Rumford for Scott City. Each with a game-high 24 points. Owen Bailey of Southeast was the only other player in double figures with 10.
      Coming down to the wire, Scott City's Rumford was fouled with 0.6 on the clock on a three-point attempt as the Beavers trailed by three. Rumford missed his first attempt and made his second, setting up what would be a final attempt to tie or win the game with a miss.  His final attempt was off, but the Trojans, now 5-5 overall, grabbed the rebound and secured the win. It wasn't what the second-seeded Lady Beavers had in mind when the week started, but their 55-24 win over the Lady Bears secured the third-place trophy.
      Led by Megan Trout with 18 points, the Lady Beavers, 6-4 overall, never looked back after jumping out to a quick 9-0 lead.  They did nothing but increase that lead as the first half moved along.  The Lady Beavers led 15-4 after one period and 33-9 at halftime. That margin would eventually move to more than 30 points by the start of the fourth quarter.
      Sterling, 4-7, was led in scoring by Aleya Ravenstien with eight points. Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Beavers were Erika Felker with 13 and Avery Lewis with 11. (Dwight Nichols)

      Scoring was hard to come by on both ends before the Bears went on a 14-4 run in the second period to take a 26-11 lead into halftime.
      Sterling would eventually push that lead to 22 points early in the fourth quarter.  Led by Carson Gray with 14 points, the Bears would hang on to that advantage until the final buzzer. Gabe Riffel grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Sterling, who would control the boards, 33-23 over the Trojans.
      Southeast, 4-5 overall, was led by sophomore Gannon Jacobson with 12 points.  Also in double figures for Sterling was sophomore Boston Ekart with 12.
      Advancing into the championship game, Sterling, 9-1, will face Hugoton at 4:30 pm on Saturday afternoon in the Gleason Center at Sterling College. Southeast will play in the third-place contest at 1:30 pm, also at Sterling College, against the Scott City Beavers. (Dwight Nichols)

<![CDATA[Hugoton Outlasts Scott City in Double OT]]>Sat, 20 Jan 2024 14:14:05 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/hugoton-outlasts-scott-city-in-double-ot​  In a double overtime thriller, the Hugoton Eagles found a way to pull out the win over the Scott City Beavers on Friday night in the Sterling Invitational Basketball Tournament by the score of 43-40.
      With seven ties and seven lead changes, the game was up for grabs the entire way.  Led by Emmett Gaskill with 11 points, the Eagles jumped out to a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter.  However, the Beavers would come back to tie things up at 22-all at halftime.
      The two teams would remain tied after each of the final two periods before going into the first overtime.  Tied at 35-all after four quarters, the two teams remained tied at 35-all after the first overtime. The Eagles put up two strong defensive stands in the final seconds of the second overtime to secure the win.
      Scott City won the rebounding edge, 25-14, but lost the turnover battle, committing 27 turnovers to just 17 for Hugoton. The Beavers were led in scoring by Jackson Rumford with a game-high 16 points, followed by Sage Stoecklein with 11.  
      Now 7-1 on the season, Hugoton will take on the host, Sterling Black Bears in the championship contest at 4:30 pm in the Gleason Center at Sterling College. The Beavers, 7-2, will face Southeast of Saline for third place at 1:30 pm, also at Sterling College. (Dwight Nichols)]]>
<![CDATA[hugoton Lady Eagles Defeat Lyons 35-30]]>Sat, 20 Jan 2024 14:12:36 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/hugoton-lady-eagles-defeat-lyons-35-30Behind the scoring of Saedy Arredondo and Abigail Slocum, the Hugoton Lady Eagles, came out on top of the Lyons Lady Lions, 35-20 in the Sterling Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament on Friday at Sterling High School.
      Hugoton jumped out to a 14-1 advantage after the first quarter.  Lyons did pull themselves back into the game by halftime, trailing only 16-13, but could not overcome the large early deficit in the end.
      Arredondo led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, followed by Slocum with 13 points.  Lyons had three players with six points, Dayana Gonzales, Peyton Kruse, and Sierra Belote.
      Hugoton moves to 3-5 on the season and will face Kingman in a battle of Eagles for fifth place at 12:00 pm in the Ora Shields Activity Center at Sterling High School on Saturday.       The Celtics were never in trouble, shooting 63 percent from the field for the game. On the other hand, the Celtics could only manage to shoot 29 percent.
      With the Celtics leading 64-29 going into the final period, the contest finished with a running clock in the fourth quarter.
      High scores for Trinity were Max Ryan with 21 points, followed by Drew Dechant with 11 and Aaron Gust and Jackson Dozier with 10 each. Double figure scorers for Kingman were Tristen Davidson with 15 and Chase Webster with 11.

      The Lions made a statement early, taking a 9-8 lead after the first quarter and 22-17 at halftime.  But the Vikings would have the final say.
      Led by Kian Blanchat with 18 points, the Vikings found their rhythm and put up 26 points in the third period for a 43-32 advantage. But the Lions would tie things up at 45-all at the end of regulation to force overtime.
      Lyons, 1-8, was led by Ethan Luck with a game-high 19 points and Xavier Solis with 11.  But it was not enough. Lyons will face Kingman in the seventh-place contest at 1:30 pm in the South Gym at Sterling High School.  Smoky Valley, 3-5, will go into the fifth-place game against Hutchinson Trinity, also at 1:30 pm, in the Ora Shields Activity Center at Sterling High School. <![CDATA[Lady Trojans hold off pesky Black Bears]]>Sat, 20 Jan 2024 04:11:32 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/lady-trojans-hold-off-pesky-black-bearsThe Southeast of Saline Lady Trojans found themselves in a dogfight with the Sterling Lady Black Bears in the semi-finals of the Sterling Girls Invitational Tournament on Friday afternoon.  When it was all said and done, the Lady Trojans pulled away for a 46-35 win.
      Thanks to a three-point bucket by Sterling's Blaine Locke in the final seconds of the opening quarter, things were tied at 13-all. Things remained tight through the second quarter as well.
      The two teams exchanged three-point baskets near the end of the quarter with Shklar Olsen connecting near the end of the quarter to pull the Lady Bears within three at 28-25 at the half.
       But the second half belonged to Southeast as they began to pull away in the third quarter. Leading 39-29 heading into the final period, the Lady Trojans maintained their double-digit lead to advance into the Championship game on Saturday.
      Olsen led the Lady Bears with 12 points followed by Locke with 10.  Abigail Pearson and Maddie Harris led Southeast with 11 points each.

      Southeast, 7-2, will face Smoky Valley in the championship game at 3:00 pm at Sterling College.  Sterling, 4-6, will match up with Scott City in the third-place contest at 12:00 pm, also at Sterling College

      With a quick start in the first quarter, the Lady Vikings led the entrie contest. A 17-8 advantage was more than enough to lead to the win.

      Adrian Hazelwood led the way for Smoky Valley with 23 points, including shooting 11 for 13 from the free throw line. Erika Felker led Scott City with nine points.

      Smoky Valley will face Southeast of Saline in the Championship contest on Saturday afternoon in the Gleason Center at Sterling College at 3:00 pm. Scott City will take on sterling in the third-place contest, also at Sterling College, at 12:00 pm.]]>

      Trinity held a one-point advantage, 13-12, after the first quarter. The Lady Celtics maintained that lead at the halftime intermission, 23-17.
      However, the Lady Eagles brought out their defense in the third quarter, holding Trinity to just two points.  That gave Kingman a one-point advantage, 26-25 going into the final period.
      Leading the way for the Lady Eagles was Laney Wood with 15 points.  Mattie Galliher had 11 for Trinity.

      After jumping out to an 11-5 lead after the first eight minutes, the Lady Vikings pushed that lead to 27-11 by the halftime intermission. Though neither team shot the ball particularly well from the field, 24 percent for Trinity and 26 percent for Smoky Valley, the Lady Vikings helped themselves going 8-15 from the foul line in the first half.
      Tinley Scott finished with 16 points for Smoky Valley, followed by Adrian Hazelwood with 11.  Katja Blanchat finished with eight rebounds.  Trinity, 2-8, was led by Sarah Buerrero with eight points.
      The Lady Vikings, 3-4, advance to semi-final play on Friday against Scott City at 3:00 pm at Sterling High School.  Trinity will matchup in the consolation bracket against Kingman, also at 3:00 pm in the South Gym at Sterling High School.]]>
<![CDATA[Sterling shakes off Smoky Valley for win]]>Fri, 19 Jan 2024 04:21:02 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/sterling-shakes-off-smoky-valley-for-winFighting off a slow start, the #1 seeded Sterling Black Bears found their stride and advanced through the first round of the Sterling Invitational Tournament with a 57-43 win over the Smoky Valley Vikings in the final game of the day on Thursday.
      Despite going 0-4 from the foul line in the first quarter, the Bears were able to edge out a 10-7 lead after the first period.  An 11-0 run to start the second quarter pushed the lead to double digits and the host Bears never looked back.
      The Vikings committed 14 turnovers in the first half, while Sterling shot 9 of 13 from the field in the second quarter to take control. The sixth-ranked Class 2A Black Bears would stretch their lead to 21 points in the third quarter.
      Sterling finished the game shooting 45 percent overall while committing only seven turnovers.  The Vikings would shoot 42 percent from the field but end up committing 22 turnovers for the game.
      Sterling, 8-1 overall, was led in scoring and rebounding by Boston Ekart off the bench with 17 points and seven rebounds. Also in double figures for Sterling were Gabe Riffel with 14 points and Isaac Briar with 11. Smoky Valley was led by Kian Blanchat with a game-high of 19 points. Samuel Peterson grabbed nine rebounds.
     Sterling will play in the semi-finals Friday night at 7:30 pm against Southeast of Saline.  Smoky Valley, 1-6, will face Lyons at 3:00 pm.  Both games will take place in the Gleason Center at Sterling College. (Dwight Nichols)

<![CDATA[Southeast Pressures Lions for win]]>Fri, 19 Jan 2024 03:31:22 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/southeast-pressures-lions-for-win​The 5th-seeded Southeast of Saline Trojans stepped up and made their way to the Friday night semi-finals with a very convincing 54-21 win over the Lyons Lions Thursday night in the first round of the Sterling Invitational Basketball Tournament.
      Taking advantage of their length and quickness, the Trojans set out on a 16-0 first quarter advantage. Lyons would get on the board with back-to-back buckets early in the second quarter, but the damage was already done.
      With a 48-15 lead going into the final eight minutes, the contest finished with a running clock in the fourth quarter.  For the game, Lyons finished with 33 turnovers to just nine for Southeast.
      The Trojans, 4-4 on the season, were led by Brenton Leeds with 14 points and six rebounds.  The Lions were led by Xavier Solis with 11 points and nine rebounds.

<![CDATA[Scott city over Kingman]]>Fri, 19 Jan 2024 03:25:49 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/scott-city-over-kingman​ The Scott City boys jumped out in front of the Kingman Eagles in the first quarter and never looked back.  The Beavers ran away with a 65-47 win in first round action of the Sterling Invitational Tournament.  Scoring 28 points in the first quarter, Scott City looked like all the part of a #2 tournament seed.

      The Beavers extended their lead to 39-19 by halftime and 57-32 after three quarters.

      Leading the way for the Beavers were Jackson Rumford with 19 points and Sage Stoecklein with 17.  Game-high honors went to Chase Webster of the Eagles with 20.

      Scott City will face Hugoton on Friday at 6:00 pm, while Kingman will take on Hutchinson Trinity at 4:30 pm in second-round action at Sterling College.]]>
<![CDATA[Hugoton Defeats Trinity]]>Fri, 19 Jan 2024 03:25:02 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/hugoton-defeats-trinity​  In the first boys game of the Sterling Invitational Tournament at Sterling College, the Hugoton Eagles fought off a pesky Trinity Celtics for the 62-42 win. Hugoton jumped out front in the first quarter against the Celtics 17-7, before Trinity fought back to close the gap 26-23 at the half.
      The Eagles put the game away in the third quarter with a 21-6 advantage. Izeyah Morris had a game-high 17 points to lead the Eagles.  In all, 11 players scored for Hugoton. Drew Dechant led Trinity with 13 points.

      Hugoton will face Scott City Friday at 6:00 pm.  Trinity will match up with Kingman at 4:30 pm on Friday.  Both games will be played at Sterling College.]]>

   The game turned on the free throw line as the Vikings were 8-20 and the Trojans 21-29. Leading the Trojans was Molly Chitty as she converted 7 of her 10 tries finishing with 11 points. Keely Orr was 6 of 9 and finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Karis Calahan finished with  6 assists.
   The Vikings Kira Haxton would set a single game tournament record with 6 three-pointers and finish with a game-high 21 points and a team-high 5 assists. Bri Franklin was the only other Viking in double figures finishing with 11 points and 9 rebounds. 
​   Southeast will play Lyons in the 5th place contest while Smoky Valley will face Trinity for seventh.

   Beloit shot a combined 52 percent from the field. They were led by Sydney Johnson with 24 points and 12 rebounds followed by Shea Larson with 15 points and Sydney Barrett with 12.  Of the 18 baskets, the Trojans converted 11 were assisted.  Jess Meier finished with 7 assists and 6 points and Kalista Hubert with 4 assists of her own. Kimalee Cook and Morgan Thundberg led the Broncos with 15 and 11 points each. 

   Remington will face Hugoton in the third-place game at Sterling College while Beloit will take on Sterling in the Championship.]]>

      Both Trinity and Beloit came out hot, combining for thirty-five points in the first quarter. Tate Thompson paced the Trojans in the first quarter, Trinity’s scoring was spread among the Celtics. Conor Remar(18 pts) dominated the second period, but  Beloit kept it close and the Celtics went into the break ahead by five 36-31.
     The third period was a back and forth affair, a balanced Trinity offense had three double-digit scorers, Beloit; led by Vincent Palen (18 pts) and Hudson Smith (11 pts) nearly matched the Celtics point for point, Trinity led 50-44 into the fourth quarter. Trinity’s Hammeke brothers, Lucas and Kaleb who had 13 and 15 respectively kept the Celtics ahead; despite the efforts of Hudson Smith(11 pts) and Tate Thompson(8 pts). In the last two minutes, Trinity struggled from the charity stripe, this along with a couple of timely three by Beloit, had the Celtics with a one-possession lead in the last 20 seconds with Beloit in possession. A well-timed steal by the Celtics iced the game.
​     Trinity will face Sterling for the SIT championship at 7:30 pm at the Gleason Center. Sterling defeated Trinity earlier this year 91-75. Trinity last won the SIT in 2009, Sterling in 2012. Beloit will face Southeast of Saline in an all NCAA 3rd Place game.

<![CDATA[Lady bears defeat Hugoton in semi slugfest]]>Fri, 19 Jan 2018 04:41:51 GMThttp://sterlinginvitational.com/sit-news/january-18th-2018     The Sterling Lady Black Bears and the Hugoton Lady Eagles staged a slugfest in a  physical back and forth battle in the first semi-final of the Sterling Girls Invitational. The Lady Bears survived 47-43 to put themselves in Friday's championship game.
    Sterling would convert 20 of its 47 points from the free-throw line while making only 11 field goals for 24% for the game. It, however, was enough to overcome a young, tough Eagle team.
     Hugoton jumped out to a 7 point lead with just under two minutes left in the first before the Bears would roar back to close the deficit to three 12-9 at the end of the first period. The familiar tournament foes fought evenly in the second quarter with the Eagles maintaining their three-point lead at the break, 24-21.
     Sterling would close the gap to one point after three quarters, 33-32. In the fourth Sterling would finally take the lead and run out to a 7 point lead and held off the Eagles the rest of the way for secure the victory.
​     The Eagles were led in scoring by Johanna Rawlins with 12 points and Jordyn Beard who hauled down 12 rebounds.  
Taya Wilson once again led the Bears i with 13 points while Kinzie Comley chipped in 9 and Camille Schweizer added 7.

Sterling will face Beloit in the championship game at Sterling College.
